What Is Hospice Eligibility?

To be eligible for hospice care, a patient must meet the following core criteria:

Terminal Illness with Prognosis of Six Months or Less

A physician must certify that the patient has a life-limiting condition with an expected course of six months or less if the illness follows its natural progression.

Shift from Curative to Comfort-Focused Care

The focus of care transitions from curing the disease to prioritizing comfort, pain and symptom management, and quality of life. Care is centered on reducing discomfort and helping patients live as comfortably and peacefully as possible.

Decline in Functional Status & Clinical Indicators

Eligibility often includes documented evidence of physical decline, such as dependence on help for daily activities, significant weight loss, recurrent hospital visits, or worsening symptoms despite treatment.
